“Do you miss your baby?” she calls from the backseat of our van.
I’m deep into my driving, thinking about my drop off schedule, trying to beat the a.m. school bell.
“What?” I shout back to her. This morning we’re listening to Kate’s favorite (the Red Hot Chile Peppers or “the Peppers” as she calls them), so I have to strain above the music hear her. “What did you say, Kate?”
“Do you miss her….your baby?” she replies again.
I quickly realize she’s referring to herself in third person, and I play along.
“Oh yes, I miss her so much! Where did my baby go?”
“She’s a big girl now, but I know you don’t want her to get any bigger, right?. . . but she wants to grow up so that she can be a Mama. . . like you,” she replies.
She giggles, and my heart swells. Before I drop her off at preschool, I realize that she has been my constant companion, my little shadow, as I’ve spent the last four years shuttling her sister and brother to and fro across the city. She’s the little mascot at her sibs’ school, and she’s befriended all the teachers too. She’s a feisty one, and already she’s met all her milestones yards and yards ahead of her sis and brother. Next year will be her year, and I can’t wait to see her shine.

Love the picture. It will sad but happy when she does start school. That first day of school was hard for me with all the quietness.
so lovely. what a great story, and a beautiful little girl!
Beautiful! You must realize right now, referring to herself in the 3rd person, and taking such beautiful pictures, she’s going to be famous.
I miss my baby, too…
What a darling picture!!! Her glasses are sooo cute!! She looks so grown up since I’ve seen her last. It’s hard when our babies grow so fast…ugh!
Aww, what a beautiful compliment to you from such a grown up girl!
Unbelievable. I remember when she was born!
Just realized that you are back in the blogging world! Your kids are just beautiful.
And may I add that we are especially fond of red-rimmed glasses around my house.
